Much like a good recipe, I hope to bring a new sense and beauty to the Torah, one in which the
message can be relevant to today’s Jewish society. I hope to be inspiring and convincing, especially to those of us who have not had a strong Torah education but realize the importance of Jewish knowledge.
Sharing recipes is much like sharing the beauty of Shabbat. It ties us together. It reminds us that we are a part of those who came before us. A lasting recipe is also handed down and as Jews we have a rich amazing history, with this legacy comes the responsibility to hand over these traditions to those
who will come after us. This is a strong message, and many times becomes very difficult, especially for those of us that are in smaller cities and towns across the world with no strong Jewish support system. Places where the term Yeshiva and Kosher are practically foreign. In these environments it is difficult to raise Jewish children and it is so much easier to “go with the flow”. We need to remember that what was important to our ancestors in the desert is just as important and relevant to us today. We eat, we seek out relationships with other Jewish families, and we try, though sometimes difficult, to remember and most importantly to live the words that were written over 3700 years ago. This is much like a great recipe which our grandmothers relayed to our mothers who have, if we are lucky relayed to us, many times just verbally, much like the oral law. I have personally found that food has helped in keeping Judaism vibrant in our home. There are Jewish holidays regularly, and of course there is Shabbat every week. Shabbat as with all holidays requires preparation; this requires discussion, and every week we have a different portion of the Torah that we can discuss. This is why I started writing this website, I needed to learn about the Torah portion myself ,in order that I could discuss it appropriately with my family. Hopefully, this website will encourage you to come up with questions and discussions, so that you will also be prepared for shabbos table talk. We are obligated as Jews to study Torah. Start with this Shabbos ! The Gemara says that on Shabbos,
"Jews eat and drink and begin their meal with words of Torah.."
Ultimately it is our responsibility to hand down to future generations the timeless beauty of what Judaism is .This is what has sustained us.
Shabbat Shalom,
Miriam
